The first quarter campaign contribution reports for Missouri statewide races were filed April 15. Although the totals are faithfully reported by the press as one indicator of how well candidates are doing, a less covered but still intriguing story is who is giving to whom. Under Missouri law for state candidates, that can be individuals, corporations, unions, political action committees or political parties. For national candidates, corporations and unions cannot give directly but only through political action committees.

Take the Democratic gubernatorial primary, for example, where State Auditor Claire McCaskill is challenging incumbent Bob Holden. Intra-party struggles make for hard choices for regulars. Do you stick with the one who brought you to the dance or go off with someone else? In the January-March...
