The list of virtuoso performers who composed for the guitar is long and venerable, and the works of well-known guitarist-composers of the past, such as Francesco Corbetta (ca. 1615-1681), Robert de Visee (ca. 1655-1732/3), Fernando Sor (1778-1839), Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909), and Agustin Barrios Mangore (1885-1944), constitute much of the repertoire studied and performed today. Certainly the intimate knowledge guitarists bring to compositions written for their own instrument can result in works that are tremendously effective--but the results can also he deplorably trite or anachronistic.

Despite criticism of their highly conservative style that might be called a century too late, Barrios and Tarrega endure in popularity. The great Andres Segovia would occasionally quip that he was "guilty of composing," and although much of his original writing is charming and very idiomatic for the guitar, the compositional style is certainly conservative. (Berben recently published a three-volume set of Segovia's compositions, Obras para guitarra, edited by Angelo Gilardino [Ancona, 1997-2001].)
