With seventeen compositions and a seven-volume treatise published under his name since 1992, Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) has become more prolific in death than he was in life. The new works, sprouting as if from the grave, have been cultivated and brought to press under the guidance of Messiaen's widow, Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen. These posthumously issued scores fall into three types: [ 1) compositions completed toward the end of Messiaen's life that he did not live to see published (Un vitrail et des oiseaux [piano, winds, percussion, 1986; pub. 1992], La ville d'en-haut [piano, winds, percussion, 1987; pub. 1994], Un sourire [orchestra, 1989; pub. 1994], Piece pour piano et quatuor a cordes [1991; pub. 1992], and Eclairs sur l'au-dela ... [orchestra, 1987-91; pub. 1998]); (2) works written and published decades ago but revised between 1985 and 1990 (Apparition de l'eglise eternelle [organ, 1932; rev. 1985; reissued 1997], Turangalila-symphonie [piano, ondes Martenot, orchestra, 1946-48; rev. 1990; reissued 1992], Reveil des oiseaux [piano, orchestra, 1953; rev. 1988; reissued 2000], and Oiseaux exotiques [piano, winds, percussion, 1955-56; rev. 1985; reissued 1995]); and (3) pieces composed long before Messiaen died that he did not publish, published only in journals, or made available only on a rental basis (Feuillets inedits [piano, dudes Martenot, undated; pub. 2001], Offrande au Saint Sacrement and Prelude [organ, ca. 1930-35; pub. 2002], Le tombeau resplendissant [orchestra, 1931; pub. 1997], Piece pour le tombeau de Paul Dukas [piano, 1935; pub. 1996], Chant des deportes [chorus, orchestra, 1945; pub. 1998], Monodie [organ, 1963; pub. 1997], and Prelude [piano, 1964; pub. 2000]).
Further complicating Messiaen's bibliography has been the republication of numerous works in what appear to be unrevised reprints, although some contain additional...
