When Dianne Bolen was a child growing up in rural Mississippi, her dad allowed her to explore the woods and rivers with her brothers.

"He wasn't over-protective," she said. "Learning to hold my own with the boys helped me to become self-reliant."

Honing those survival skills helped Bolen in more ways prepare for a challenging yet fulfilling career. With a promotion in 1996 to the highest-ranking position within Mississippi Housing Corporation (MHC), Bolen became one of four females in the southeast region of the U.S. to serve as executive director of a state housing finance authority.
