Kathy Savolt is waxing philosophic about the Hudson River. Humans have an innate attraction to water. We're 80 percent water ourselves, she says. Look how raindrops hit your car windshield and then come together. They don't bounce off each other. They meld and flow down the glass in rivulets. It s poetry. It's life. It's the attraction of ions. It's no wonder that humans are drawn to water.

Savolt can't help herself. It's half her job and half her. She is the executive director of the Beczak Environmental Education Center in Yonkers. While her office is on the banks of the Hudson, ironically, it doesn't face the river. Her view is of the much grittier Alexander Street, just across from the city jail.
