Customer care is so important for Peter Montpelier's and Gina Cappelli's physical therapy business, Scarsdale-based Forme Rehabilitation Inc., that they take longer with clients, on average, even though in some ways it's less efficient.

"We have chosen to follow a model where we actually see fewer patients per hour so the load on the therapists is lower, so they have more time," said Montpelier, a co-owner and vice president of the business.

The company might have more initial business if it "pushed people through the door," he said. But what's inefficient on the surface, Montpelier said, can be more profitable overall. The extra time with clients is used for techniques that they will find much more satisfactory and that, in turn, creates repeat customers.

Taking more time per client has been part of the reason why the company has grown faster than usual, the business partners said. Annual revenues for the business grew 50 percent in 2004. Revenues grew another 20 percent in the first eight months...
