Silver is one of the oldest metals known to man, used as early as 2500 B.C., according to Chinese classics. In some ancient civilizations, it was more prized than gold.
Silver can be hammered into thin sheets, drawn into wire as fine as a strand of hair and can be molded into endless shapes through hammering, spinning, or drawing. It is easily etched and engraved.
Prior to the 16th century in Europe, silver was available primarily to nobles and clergy. But in the 17th century, the advent of the merchant class spurred the quest for this desirable metal, which was actively sought after by Spain, helping to drive exploitation of the New World. Newly wealthy merchants built great estates and furnished them with luxurious silver objects, among other things....
