"A lot of people thought I'd come in and start to pitch new business immediately,'' said Charlie Rutman, referring to industry scuttlebutt at the time of his April 4 start as CEO of MPG North America. His first priority was to get MPG's house in order, then he turned to new business. Five months later, he's got his first major win: Esurance, the car-insurance arm of White Moutains Insurance Group.

It's much needed good news for an agency that suffered some tough blows. In January, the media buying and planning unit of Havas lost Volkswagen of America's $430 million account after a review. The automaker consolidated the bulk of duties with WPP's MediaCom. That same month, Havas opted not to defend a global $300 million...
