Leland Balsiger

COTTAGE GROVE - Leland Kendall "Lee" Balsiger of Cottage Grove died Sept. 27 of age-related causes. He was 80.

He was born Aug. 10, 1925, in White Salmon, Wash., to Alvin and Lois Balsiger. He married Betty Chaffee in 1948 in Cottage Grove. They later divorced.

Balsiger graduated from Oakridge High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. He was employed in the logging and sheet metal businesses.

He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He was a longtime member of the Cottage Grove Moose Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Brainard of Eugene and Susan Cantrall of Albany; a sister, Joyce Owens of Cottage Grove; five grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

No service is planned. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Willis

A memorial service will be held Oct. 14 for Shirley Lee "Granny" Willis of Eugene, who died Sept. 27 of age-related causes. She was 75.

Willis was born April 23, 1930, in Pe Ell, Wash., to Franklin and Artie Martin Green.

She had lived in the Eugene area for 60 years. She graduated from Elmira High School and worked in retail clothing. She enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing, knitting and gardening. Her family said she greatly enjoyed Christmas. She belonged to the First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include four children, Barry, Brad, Deborah Graff and Ladarrah Farrell, all of Eugene; and six grandchildren.
