Lane County Sheriff Russ Burger defended his detectives' decision to withhold from the public details about a police impersonator who stopped, beat and raped a woman early Monday. However, he acknowledged some problems with the way the public eventually was informed and said he was looking into how the matter was handled.

He said detectives thought they would be able to catch the man responsible for the brutal attack, so they withheld information from the press and public for more than two days. They were worried the suspect might destroy evidence, he said.

"They had some leads they wanted to track down before it hit the media," Burger said Friday.
