On Oct. 2, more than 20 countries and 400 communities throughout the 50 states will observe World Farm Animals Day. Oct. 2 is also the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the world's greatest champions of peace.

On this day, according to the World Farm Animals Day Website, "caring people are conscience-bound to mourn and moralize the pointless suffering and death of 50 billion cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens and other innocent, sentient animals in the world's factory farms and slaughterhouses.'
