The assumption is this game means a little more to J.D. Nelson.
The UO junior free safety's father, Darrin, is an administrator in the Stanford athletic department. A high school teammate from Mountain View, Calif., is a reserve safety for the Cardinal.
So when Oregon travels to play at Stanford on Saturday at 2 p.m., the game is supposed to be a big one for Nelson.
But what does that mean? Is he supposed to read his keys even better? React to plays even quicker? Deliver hits even more viciously? Based on his play the past couple of weeks, that's asking a little much.
"He has probably played, back-to-back, the two best games of his career," UO coach Mike Bellotti said. "I'm very excited about the level he's playing at right now."
Nelson, 5-feet-11 and 215 pounds, enters the weekend as Oregon's leading tackler with 33 stops, eighth-best in the Pac-10 Conference and third among defensive backs.
