Article Excerpt When Eli Manning quarterbacked the Ole Miss Rebels, the population of the Oxford community swelled from 20,000 to 70,000 on home football game weekends. Even though Manning has moved on to the New York Giants, crowds continue to flood The Grove.
"I write a check to the church before football season, because I'm not going to be back until it's over," admitted a rabid Mississippi State fan, married to an Ole Miss grad. "What's worse is, 10 to 15 years ago, I'd a cussed you in a minute over a game. You're not an MSU or Ole Miss fan unless you hate each other. But the older you get, the less emotional you are about it ... it's all in fun."
And even though the devastation and loss from Hurricane Katrina has had a major impact on almost every aspect of life in the Magnolia State, thousands of fans have been relieved to enjoy a few hours of escape in supporting their favorite college teams. And the economic effects are appreciated, too.
