Turner to lead construction of posh new hotel: predictions for 5-star resort include some pricey amenities.

The "wow factor." That's what will separate the planned $265 million Grand Del Mar Resort & Spa from San Diego County's other top-flight hotels, according to Rick Bach, senior vice president of Turner Construction.

Prominent San Diego developer Doug Manchester also intends his project, slated for completion in early 2007, to be the first--if not only--five-star resort in San Diego. There are no five-star properties in the county, based on the Mobil Travel Guide rating system, and only three four-star hotels--the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, the Lodge at Torrey Pines, and the Rancho Valencia Resort, according to Namara Mercer, the executive director of the San Diego Hotel-Motel Association.

The Automobile Club of Southern California, for 2005, has bestowed five diamonds on the Four Seasons Resort Aviara and the Lodge at Torrey Pines, she said.

"The star system seems to have more prestige to it," she said. "I don't know why."
