Castor post-combustion pilot prepares to start up at Esbjerg: at the heart of the EU Castor R&D programme on post-combustion C[O.sub.2] capture is a pilot project employing real flue gas from the Esbjerg 3 coal fired unit in Denmark. A contract for the pilot installation has been signed, with take-over scheduled for this autumn.

As previously described in Modern Power Systems (July 2004, pp 19-20), the Castor project, funded by the EU under the sixth Framework Programme, aims to develop and validate the new technologies needed for post combustion capture of C[O.sub.2] and its storage. Castor activities are divided into three sub-projects:

1 - strategy for C[O.sub.2] reduction;

2 - post-combustion capture;

3 - C[O.sub.2] storage performance and risk assessment studies.

As part of sub-projects 2 and 3, large-scale field tests (addressing capture, injection and monitoring) will be executed to validate the research results. The project focuses on development of absorption technology, with about [euro]11 million allocated to this area.

The development of absorption technology will focus on new absorption liquids and process improvements to provide about 90% capture of C[O.sub.2] with energy consumption of 2 GJ/ton C[O.sub.2] or less.

Current state-of-the-art technology has an energy consumption of about 3.5 GJ/ton C[O.sub.2].
