Constable wrongly defines censorship

In Burt Constable's June 24 column, "When going gets tough, the tough make movies, not censor 'em," he accuses the group Move America Forward of "leading the censorship drive" against Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" because it is leveraging its collective consumer power and right to free speech and assembly to dissuade theater owners from showing what they deem to be a misleading and objectionable movie.

Censorship, by definition, occurs when the government uses its power to remove or suppress what it considers objectionable, not when private citizens use their power to pursue such goals.

For Constable to suggest otherwise is misleading and objectionable.

Speaker must stand up for GOP integrity

The Bush campaign's Web site features images and sounds of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime in its ad "The Faces of John Kerry's Democratic Party." Dennis Hastert must personally and unequivocally stand up to denounce this ad.

This country needs reassurance that the Republican Party is not a group of unprincipled opportunists, but instead consists of men and women of integrity and with an honest desire to lead this country with positive vision.

We very much need to hear that there are responsible members of influence in the party...
