When the minute hand ticks past 5 p.m. today, listen closely.

You may be able to hear Ken Kaczynski and his fellow Elgin Area School District U-46 board members sigh with relief.

Presuming, of course, no 11th-hour bills arrive before U-46 closes its financial books today, ending a fiscal year district leaders expect to finish in the black.

"We have all been kind of collectively holding our breath, fearing some surprise would surface," Kaczynski said.

So far, none look likely.

U-46 could end up with a $7.8 million surplus rather than a $3 million shortfall as initially forecast. That would reduce the district's $40.1 million debt,...
