Food technologists can create some pretty unique foods, like Olean, a synthetic, never-seen-before-in-nature fat, or soybeans genetically engineered to be bug resistant.

Other food scientists use sophisticated laboratory techniques to encourage what has been going on for hundreds of years: crossbreeding plants to achieve desired qualities.

Allowing nature to take its course to create new hybrids may be slow and uncertain, so science just nudges Mother Nature along a bit.

Let's take a look at some of the helped-along hybrids that will soon be available.
