In large cities around the country, it seems like there is a Starbucks on every corner - except metro Detroit. However, coffee chains are moving quickly to bring Detroit up to par with other large cities.

According to Mike McFall, president and co-owner of Lansing-based Global Orange Development Co., which operates Beaner's Gourmet Coffee, the ideal ratio is 10,000 residents to one coffee shop. In metro Detroit, he estimates the figure is well below that. He estimated there are fewer than 250 coffee shops here.

"There's a huge opportunity here,'' he said. "We're looking to take advantage of that.''

Beaner's reported 2003 sales of $9.3 million. It plans to add 20 coffeehouses within three years and could add as many as 50 within seven...
