A gnocchi dish that combines a variety of flavors and textures is something that Mitchel Hescheles makes for special occasions.

The owner of Marco's Cafe & Coffee House in Springfield and the Nip 'n' Sip Catering Co. tosses the gnocchi - Italian-style potato dumplings - with roasted mushrooms, garlic, onion and olives in a cream sauce made with sun-dried tomatoes and serves them on a bed of wilted spinach.

"If I were doing it as a special occasion meal, it would probably be a course in and of itself, similar to a pasta course," Hescheles said, adding that he would serve the gnocchi before the meat course.

In completing a meal for the $10 Gourmet, Hescheles' dessert is a berry crisp streusel with almonds, oats and cinnamon that he said would have been even better had the budget allowed him to buy vanilla ice cream.

The $10 Gourmet is a feature that allows professional chefs to give menu ideas to home cooks by preparing a meal for two on a $10 budget.
