SEATTLE - Khalil Greene looks just like he did as a Eugene Emerald.

His straight blonde hair still creeps out of his batting helmet, and the jersey remains a little baggy. His demeanor, unassuming and humble, also remains the same.

Greene's surroundings, however, have changed drastically since he made his professional debut with the Emeralds two years ago Saturday in front of a couple thousand Northwest League fans in Vancouver, B.C. Last weekend, Greene returned to the Northwest to play in front of more than 40,000 at Safeco Field.

He is no longer the hot prospect he was with the Emeralds, but rather a candidate for National League rookie of the year as the starting shortstop of the San Diego Padres.

It's been a meteoric rise for Greene, who said he never looked that far ahead while he was in Eugene.

"At the time there was so much going on, I was just trying to stay above water," Greene said after going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Mariners. "I went...
