Don't point toy guns at people

On June 23 at 5 p.m., I was driving through the Fairfield Shopping Center on Highway 99N. Five boys ages 10 to 12 surrounded my car on their bikes as I was driving slowly through the parking lot. One boy was shooting a silver pistol at my driver's side window. Thankfully, it was a toy, and I could hear the snap of the caps. It was very disturbing, and I was on edge, just waiting for that one real shot.

I'm sharing this story because I've heard a similar incident happen to a friend of mine while she was jogging - having a little boy appear from behind a car pointing and shooting a toy gun at her. Someday, one of these children is going to point a toy gun at the wrong person, someone who might have been held at gunpoint at some time in their life. It might be it a rape victim, someone who has been mugged, a veteran or just someone afraid of those possibilities. There are many circumstances that might cause someone to react and shoot back before there is time to realize the gun pointing at them is a toy.

If you are going to allow your child to play with toy guns, please, for their safety, teach them to not point them at others. You just might save his or her life.
