CORRECTION (ran 7/01/04): Butte to Butte race co-director Barbara Kousky is not frustrated with the expense of hiring police officers. A story on Page A1 Wednesday wrongly suggested that she's frustrated with that expense.

Runners know this Sunday's venerable Butte to Butte 10-kilometer run as a signature race, a chance to test themselves up and down the streets of Eugene.

It's also virtually the only chance to race city streets: Here in Track Town USA, true road races have gone the way of red-white-and-blue sweatbands.

Organizers say the Butte to Butte on July Fourth and the five-kilometer Community Classic in August are the only races routed through the city. Many of the others have disappeared or take to the off-road paths of Alton Baker Park and other city parks.

Some of the old road races may have fallen prey to declining interest, but local race coordinators say the biggest factor in the drop-off is the requirement to have Eugene police officers provide traffic control. The price...
