The field of Bayesian networks, better known to the statistical community as probabilistic graphical models, is an area where the collaboration between researchers in statistics and artificial intelligence has been fruitful. Graphical models have been responsible for ground-breaking advances in statistics, such as the development of an amenable Gibbs sampler (Thomas, Spiegelhalter, and Gilks 1992), and for remarkable applications in artificial intelligence.
