The peculiar, mawkish spectacle of alpine cattle-folk riding through the streets of inner-Melbourne in mid-June was the stuff of a populist's and nationalist's dream. Protesting against a ban on their environmentally damaging activities in the alpine regions of Victoria, the group mobilised a range of national mythologies, the lot making it appear as if the set of McLeod's Daughtershad been relocated to Melbourne's urbane heart: Drizabones, Akubras, R.M. Williams shirts, work boots and, of course, forbiddingly muscular horses. Tom Burlinson reprised his role from Man from Snowy River--Method acting seeming to have truly elided the movie/reality distinction--and rousingly addressed the assembled crowd. State and federal Liberal and National politicians nodded in knowing assent, climbed aboard the populist horse and suggested the Victorian Labor party cared more for its credentials within...
