Salem-Keizer's run at the best batting average in Northwest League history got a big boost Tuesday night.

The Volcanoes pounded out 21 hits in a 16-3 win over Eugene in front of 2,352 at Civic Stadium. The 21 hits were the most by any team in the league this season.

Salem-Keizer pushed its league-leading batting average up from .294 to .296. A couple more nights like that and Salem-Keizer could threaten the league record of .302 set by Boise in 1999.

"The whole team is coming along," said Salem-Keizer outfielder Mike Mooney, who was 3-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI. "We've had three or four guys who have been hitting the ball well all year and everyone else is getting hot at the end of the year. They pick us up when we are not hitting well."
