At the intersection of Coburg Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard is `TD-MAN,' the likeness of Oregon tailback Terrence Whitehead stretched across the billboard with `POW!'added for emphasis.
Swing down Franklin Boulevard and right across from campus is the billboard with `COVERMEN,' cornerbacks Justin Phinisee, with a `SWOOP' under him, and Aaron Gipson with `WHOOSH' under his likeness, with strong safety Anthony Trucks standing menacingly in between.
This year's versions of the Oregon promotional billboards are popping up around town - and one off I-5 in Salem, too - with a different look from past years. Call it the comic-book version.
`This concept is great,' tight end Tim Day said. `It's something we didn't have before.'
What it is, explained UO associate athletic director Jim Bartko, is an evolution into what's new and different and popular with the age group that includes Oregon athletes.
`You want something that clicks,' Bartko said. `Recruited athletes in all sports are into action heroes, so we thought we'd do a takeoff on that.'
It's not unlike a one-frame version of the comic books the Ducks have used in recruiting, to feature an athlete as the superhero. Besides the two billboards listed above, there is...
