Downtown Jackson is finally moving from government projects to private, taxable real estate development.

"For years, downtown's revitalization has been spurred by government facilities and needed infrastructure improvements," said John Lawrence, president of Downtown Jackson Partners. "Recently, this has been most evident in state projects like the new Supreme Court/Mississippi Justice Building, the Public Employees Retirement System and the Winter Archives and History Building. All are wonderful examples of exquisite civic architecture."

The City of Jackson has also been reinvesting and consolidating operations in downtown by restoring City Hall, a $1.8-million interior renovation project, and redesigning the Jackson Police Department headquarters, a $5.2-million project.

The $17.5-million, 70,000-square-foot TelCom Center, located on the corner of Farish and Pascagoula streets, should open in September, with the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) moving in and the first meeting booked for November...
