A new papacy generally means new personnel in the Vatican, and no appointment looms larger for Pope Benedict XVI than naming his own successor at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. It's no surprise, therefore, that the media is awash with speculation about the new prefect of the congregation once known as la Suprema, or "the supreme," and no name has loomed larger than that of Archbishop William J. Levada of San Francisco.
