Article Excerpt During the week of June 1, the International Franchise Association led visits to three state capitols in the Northeast: Albany, Boston and Providence. Representatives from Wendy's International, Yum! Brands, Cendant and the National Restaurant Association teamed up with IFA on these important relationship-building endeavors. The group discussed with legislators issues of concern to the franchising community and the impressive results of the economic impact study. On June 9, IFA testified in support of legislation in the Louisiana Senate's Commerce, Consumer Protection and International Affairs Committee that repealed a narrowly crafted franchise relationship law. To date, IFA has visited nine state capitols this year.
Northeast Presents Challenges
New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island present the franchise community with legislative challenges ranging from tax increases to workers' compensation reform to proposals to increase the minimum wage. Each of these legislatures has also considered franchise relationship legislation in the past year, although under IFA's watchful eye, none of those bills have advanced.
