Royal Basketball Academy's decade-long challenge to dribble around the world reached a milestone last Monday as 57 boys and girls bounced the five-year total past 10,000 miles. The program's goal of 24,902 miles, the circumference of the Earth, will keep the kids dribbling for the remainder of this decade. Nearly 200 boys and girls from pre-kindergarten to high school have contributed to the total, now about 200 miles beyond 10,000 following the season-ending sessions on Wednesday and Friday.

The individual mileage leader is Willamette High School freshman Austyn Coelho, with 535 miles through last Monday. His sister, Aysia, is tops among girls with 205 miles. Other families, such as the Petersons of Irving Elementary School, have three siblings participating. Jed, a fifth grader, and Mya, in second grade, were tied at 126 miles apiece last week. They have been dribbling for two years, along with 4-year-old brother Joey, who has accumulated 110 miles. Another sibling trio has combined for even more miles: The Lee sisters - seventh-grader Jenna (195), third-grader Abby (177) and 5-year-old Maggie (102) - have bounced nearly 500 miles along the Bethel area bike path that the RBA kids follow in their quest.

Participation in the around-the-world dribbling program is free and attracts kids from throughout Eugene and surrounding areas. The dribbling sessions, held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from early May to late August, are separate from the Academy's year-round skills camps and all are welcome.
