In her volunteer job, Pat Wasmundt gets to reach out to the child she once was.

It is not a happy reunion.

"I grew up in an abusive home; more than one," says Wasmundt, one of 35 volunteers on nine citizen review boards in Lane County.

The boards, required by law since the late 1980s, review the progress of parents whose children have been taken from them, and monitor the performance of the child welfare workers who either reunite the families or place the children for adoption.

"I know what it feels like to be that child," Wasmundt says. "If I can save one child from experiencing what I experienced as a child, it would make it worth it."
