Remove old garage sale signs

People who hold garage sales are practicing a sensible and environmentally sound way of getting rid of stuff.

Garage sales also provide an enjoyable pastime for people like me who like to treasure hunt and save a few bucks. Clearly, the signs posted on street corners are helpful in finding the treasure, but they can be misleading when they just become "vertical litter" from last week's or last month's sale.

Besides, gasoline is getting too expensive, and driving to expired destinations just adds unneeded traffic. It also may raise a safety issue for children playing, as garage sale hunters squirrel their way around trying to find that sale site.

Some towns have had to enact rules prohibiting the posting of signs on public property in order to deal with the mess created by unremoved signs. Not only are the people leaving a trashy reflection on the community, but they also add considerable expense in the long run for cleanup.

I propose that everyone who leaves a sign posted after their sale has expired should have to pay a $50 littering fee. Hopefully, they will sell enough stuff to pay the fine. The police could deliver the citation to the residence, and it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to raise $50 for a civic project....
