Carter has always considered involuntary terminations the most distressing part of working in HR. "It represents failure on our part because we didn't match the right person to the right job," said Paul "Nebo" Carter of Singing River Hospital System. "No one likes it, and we never get accustomed to it. It always creates knots in my stomach."

PASCAGOULA -- As director of human resources for the 2,300-employee Singing River Hospital System, Paul "Nebo" Carter laughs when asked to describe a typical day.

"They're all different. No two are alike," he said. "Today began at 7:45 at the East Central Medical Center in Hurley for a meeting on an issue with an employee. That's the kind of thing I deal with a good bit. I try to help solve problems."
