In 1998, and as a result of a three-year research programme jointly sponsored by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which reviewed social classifications, a new social classification was introduced for use in UK government statistics.
Dr Gordon Marshall, chief executive of the ESRC, in a foreword to A Researcher's Guide, stressed the 'the decision to replace fundamental components of the UK's official socio-economic classifications ... was not taken lightly,' and only after 'detailed and systematic research by a team of some two dozen social scientists and survey research specialists, under the guidance of University of Essex sociologists David Lockwood and David Rose.'
