Companies with at least 500 employees expressed interest in consumer-driven health plans such as health savings accounts, BenefitNews.com reports. While 4 percent of large employers offer a CDHP now, 14 percent say they're likely to do so this year, and 26 percent are likely to offer one by 2006.
Why CDHPs?
A CDHP is designed to encourage employees to take an active role in their healthcare and make informed decisions about expenditures. With a traditional benefits package, employers offer a menu of health plan options for their employees. If employees choose a plan that costs more than the employers' contributions, employees pay the difference. With a CDHP, employers still contract with insurers for health plans, but employees choose their benefit levels and deductibles.
The concept of consumer-driven plans has existed for many years and the first plans were introduced in 2001. Employers believed giving employees more control of their plan design would result in better utilization of benefits, hoping that CDHPs would keep healthcare costs under control, says Karen Gustin, vice president of group marketing and managed care for Ameritas Group Dental and Eye Care, Lincoln, Neb.
