The sentiments from the Global Week of Action against trade liberalisation were aired much earlier, at the Beijing + 10 review at the 49th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) held in New York, USA from February and March 2005.

Economic empowerment is the element that is lacking to achieve gender equality for women at all levels, according to different women's groups and networks advocating for the different critical areas of concern of the Beijing Platrform for Action (BPFA) at the CSW. Even though a specific critical area pertains to women and the economy, more needs to be done in terms of analysing the valid progress of women's participation in society. The issue that cuts across all women's concerns in the critical areas still revolve around financial situations.
