They don't call it a grudge match, but speed hiking champion Ted "Cave Dog" Keizer and his "Dog Team" support crew have something to prove.

Last year, the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the country chewed up Keizer, a Coos Bay native, and spit him out in rain-soaked pieces, while fate in the form of failing phone lines and a broken down vehicle thrashed the Dog Team and sent them all home, tails between legs.

This year, they're back undaunted.

At 4:15 a.m. Wednesday, Keizer began his second attempt to hike the 272-mile trail through Vermont's Green Mountains faster than anybody else.

While rain had soaked the trail the day before Keizer started and fog hampered his first few hours, he made good time under blue skies, hiked through the night and by Thursday afternoon had gone just more...
