Country needs ethic of charity

When I read the newspaper, my frequent reaction is to exclaim, "Look what they're (the world's) doing now!" Many pietists are spiteful and could learn a little charity. Many liberals are neglectful and could learn a little duty. Our country needs a new ethic of dutiful charity.

The world is at war between those who hate and those who love. Both Muslims and Christians face this dilemma - whether to hate or to love? The gospels, as I read them, speak of loving God, loving your neighbor as yourself, loving your enemies and loving one another. There isn't much room for spiteful neglect in the gospels. I choose dutiful charity.

The scandal involving the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline taking advantage of unsuspecting children deserves more attention.

What Glaxo representatives had been doing was encouraging doctors to prescribe Paxil to depressed children while their own studies showed that it was not only ineffective in that age group but also increased suicidal behavior. And while Glaxo's behavior in selling this useless and potentially deadly drug to already suffering children was bad enough, evidence suggests the real pharmaceutical scandal is much larger.
