The Springfield and Eugene school districts will collaborate on grant applications this summer to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to cover start-up costs for complementary high school arts academies specializing in theater, visual arts, music and dance.

The details are sketchy, particularly for Eugene's proposal, but the goal is to open new small high schools - 400 students at most - in each district, with Springfield's focused on theater and visual arts and Eugene's on music and dance. Possibly, students could cross district boundaries to attend the academy of their choice.

The districts will spend the next month refining their applications.

The grants are available through the year-old, $25 million Oregon Small Schools Initiative, funded by the Gates Foundation and the Meyer Memorial Trust. The largest private donation ever to Oregon schools, the grant aims to boost achievement and reduce dropout rates, primarily among low-income and minority students, by creating smaller, more personalized high schools.
