In a blow to Lane County's economy, 206 employees at Eugene software call center Stream were told Wednesday that they will lose their jobs before the end of the summer.

At a mass staff meeting, Texas-based Stream told Eugene workers that the company had lost a key contract to provide customer support for Symantec software products, and that it would lay off the workers effective Aug. 23. That gives workers the 60-day notice required under federal law for large-scale layoffs.

The Stream office is on Broadway in downtown Eugene. Aside from providing modest-paying jobs and training to about 300 workers, the office is a source of business for downtown Eugene retailers.
