Article Excerpt In the midst of a massive overhaul of its distribution system, Atlanta Gas Light Company has moved past the half-way point, having replaced 1.291 miles of pipe on the 2,504-mile project. Scheduled for completion in 2008, the program was at first designed to prioritize the retirement of segments of pipe with the worst-leak history. Now in the sixth year of the program, the strategy has allowed AGL to substantially improve the safety and reliability, of its system.
Directing the utility's program is Jay Sutton, Director of Construction Management. He has been with the company for 20 years, serving in a variety of engineering and construction positions both in the field and in the corporate office. In a recent interview, Sutton said he was pleased with the progress being n-lade on the project.
"At this point, were on track to complete the renewal of the remaining segments of bare steel and cast iron over the next four years. However, there is much work left to be done and our expectations will only be met when all bare steel and cast iron pipe in Georgia is eliminated," he said.
