On a recent rainy afternoon, I drove to the Thien Thai Mountain in the Bao Thap village of Bac Ninh province, about 40 kilometres east of Hanoi. The trip was triggered by a story a close friend of mine had told me, about a strange dragon made of stone there. As if my visit were fated to be, on the way to the temple I had a serendipitous encounter with Nguyen Duc Dam, the 69-year-old custodian of the temple that worships Le Van Thinh, the first Trang Nguyen (doctoral candidate) of Vietnam's feudal history. As the rain fell more and more heavily, Dam invited me into his house. The temple would have to wait, but I had found a guide to lead me through this unusual story.

The temple, or the Temple of the Doctor Mandarin as the locals call it, sits at the bottom of the Thien Thai Mountain, over 100 metres above sea level. It includes Thien Thu Tu (Pagoda of the Heavenly Book), a temple to worship Le Van Thinh, and a smaller temple where the stone dragon lies.
