Who could ever forget the chemistry between Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard, which thrilled audiences with its exciting portrayal of love and protection? Security guards have a tough life, both in and out of the bedroom.
Although the job of security guard has existed in Vietnam only since the mid-1990s, and the country is lucky to face little crime, that doesn't mean that guards in Vietnam have less training and skills than those in developed countries. In fact, with around 100 security services firms across the country, Vietnamese guards have experienced their fair share of hardship in training and on the job--all you have to do is spend some time with them to see just how tough things can be.
I arrive at the Botanical Garden on Hoang Hoa Tham street one morning to see how the guards are trained. On a concrete courtyard, damp with sweat, the Long Hai trainees are practicing martial exercises. Long Hai is one of northern Vietnam's leading security services, training about 80 guards every two months on the average. The students...
