Article Excerpt The John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County is well-known as the country's largest rocket test facility and the place where, since 1975, all space shuttle main engines that power the shuttle into orbit have been tested. The center is also the lead facility for rocket propulsion testing.
What is less well known is that the center is home to more than 30 federal, state, academic and private organizations.
One of these, the Center for Higher Learning (CHL), is a unique research and academic entity that serves the center, the surrounding Mississippi Gulf Coast urea, the state and federal governments and the business community.
CHL offers degrees through a consortium of the University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi State University, the University of New Orleans and Pearl River Community College and is unusual in that all required classes can be taken on-site at the center.
