In the 30 years he's been tracking trees in Rolling Meadows, Chief Forester Jim McFeggan has never seen so many dead elms in the city.

"Normally, during an average summer, we will have 10 to 15 elms that will have to be taken down," McFeggan said. "We're getting close to double that amount."

The Rolling Meadows City Council approved the clearing away of 26 dead trees last week at a cost of more than $16,000.

"It's been a tough year on trees," Mayor Ken Nelson said at the meeting.
