San Diegan helps keep Air Force plane aloft.

When the Air Force put an experimental aircraft into service on short notice, it needed someone very familiar with the system to travel to the part of the world where it was to be operated.

That's how San Diego County resident Avis Anderson, then 38, got his first trip to a place he calls "an undisclosed forward location," to help with the between-flight maintenance of the robot aircraft.

Anderson, a manufacturing engineer and an employee of aircraft builder Northrop Grumman Corp., is now 41. Toward the end of May, he returned from his fourth trip to the forward air base.
