Ten years ago, in its song "Rock 'N' Roll Lifestyle," alternative rock band Cake posed this question:

"How much did you pay for your rock 'n' roll T-shirt - that proves you were there, that you heard of them first?"

The band could not have foreseen today's Internet/big box store/mall era, when attending a concert is no longer a prerequisite of acquiring a band T-shirt.

William Kennedy, 29, remembers when, as a teenager, wearing band shirts said something about your beliefs, a sub-culture you belonged to, or declared your knowledge of an underground band.
