Time was, the world didn't take itself all that seriously. A lucky few didn't, anyway.

When Cole Porter sat down at the piano and composed music during the Depression that separated two world wars, he dissected the universe around him with comic wit, aristocratic style and musical verve.

This year's Oregon Festival of American Music, which kicks off Monday at the Shedd Institute in Eugene, takes a two-week look at the tragic, funny and brilliant little man who brought us "Let's Do It," "Don't Fence Me In," "Begin the Beguine" and "Anything Goes."

With a restored 1934 musical comedy; 10 separate afternoon and evening concerts at the Shedd, at the Hult Center and at Cuthbert Amphitheater; a series of free lectures and films; and an all-comers jazz marathon, this year's summer festival will truly live up to its name: "Cole Porter Night and Day."
