ALVADORE - They're not worried.
In fact, they've never been more confident that NASA is doing the right thing and taking every precaution to make sure that the wrong thing doesn't happen again when the space shuttle Discovery heads home on Aug. 7 or 8.
As the seven astronauts aboard the space shuttle prepare for today's spacewalk, Anne and Ralph Haynes, the mother and stepfather of shuttle astronaut Capt. Wendy Lawrence, say the crew will get home safely, and the shuttle program will rebound from the uncertainties that currently have it mired in controversy.
"There's no question they'll get home," said Ralph Haynes, the retired pastor of Eugene's St. Thomas Episcopal Church who lives here with his wife.
Lawrence, 46, was the 23rd American woman to go into space during the first of her four shuttle missions on March 2, 1995. She was a crew member that year on the Endeavour, a sister ship of the Columbia. The Columbia would disintegrate over Texas upon re-entry almost eight years later, killing the crew, all of whom were friends and colleagues of Lawrence.
